Ruth began her NHS career as a Biomedical Scientist and Laboratory Manager in 1987. In 2001, Ruth then became Business Manager for Directorates of Medicine, Women and Childrens Services and Medicine for the Elderly at Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust before moving to the North East and North Cumbria. 

Ruth began her career in the region at South Tees Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in 2001. Her first role at South Tees was as Divisional Manager Cardiothoracic Services. Ruth spent over 13 years at South Tees Hospitals which included roles as Deputy Director for Performance Management, Deputy Director Healthcare Governance and Quality and Executive Director of Quality. 

After a brief stint away from the NHS Ruth returned in 2018 joining the North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care System as Diagnostic Programme Director for the Provider Collaborative.
