South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust (STSFT) provides acute and community healthcare services to a core population of over 430,000 people living in South Tyneside and Sunderland. It also provides services to parts of Durham and Gateshead.
Over 8,500 staff provide care from the Trust’s main hospital sites at Sunderland Royal Hospital, South Tyneside District Hospital, Sunderland Eye Infirmary, as well as multiple community sites and in people’s own homes.
The Trust runs a range of specialist services to around 1 million people across the North East and North Cumbria. This includes Ophthalmology, Urology, Renal Medicine, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Vascular Surgery. It is also a regional centre for Bariatric Surgery providing surgical weight management services to patients who are clinically obese.
Work is underway on a new regional Eye Hospital to replace outdated facilities at Sunderland Eye Infirmary. This will open in 2026 to provide eye specialist care for thousands of people and will become the new home for the regional Cataract Treatment Centre.
STSFT has a leading reputation for digital innovation and was one of the first Trusts in the country to achieve Global Digital Exemplar (GDE) status.
