Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust provides hospital, community and older people’s mental health services for around 200,000 people in Gateshead. It also delivers a range of specialist services to patients across the North East and beyond.
The Trust provides care from several sites across the borough, including the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Bensham Hospital, Blaydon Urgent Treatment Centre and the Community Diagnostic Centre at the Metrocentre, which opened in 2024.
Services include emergency and urgent care, outpatient appointments, rehabilitation, diagnostic testing, maternity care, mental health services and community-based support. Gateshead Health also provides specialist screening, pathology, breast services and gynaecological cancer services across a wider area covering parts of the North East, Cumbria, Lancashire and Humberside.
The Trust employs more than 5,100 staff and is committed to providing high-quality, compassionate care. Its maternity services are among the best performing in the country, while its work in treating gynaecological cancers has earned national and international recognition.
Gateshead Health is a leader in innovation and uses advanced technologies, including robotic-assisted surgery, to improve patient care. It is also the North East hub for the NHS Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Screening Programme and the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme, supporting around seven million people.
The Trust operates Gateshead Fertility Centre, one of the UK's leading IVF services, helping hundreds of families each year. It also owns QE Facilities Limited, which provides estates, facilities, procurement and transport services, with profits reinvested into patient care.
Gateshead Health works closely with partner organisations through Gateshead Cares and the Great North Healthcare Alliance to improve services and outcomes for local communities across the region.
