Newcastle Hospitals is one of the largest NHS trusts in the UK. It provides a wide range of hospital and community services for patients from across the North East and beyond. The Trust employs more than 16,000 staff and is recognised for its high-quality care, research and innovation.
The Trust provides services from a number of sites, including the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI), Freeman Hospital, Campus for Ageing and Vitality, Newcastle Dental Hospital, Newcastle Fertility Centre and the Northern Genetics Centre.
Many of its services support people with rare and complex conditions. Newcastle Hospitals is one of the NHS’s largest providers of specialised care, including treatments for cancer, heart and lung disease, neurological conditions and genetic disorders. The Trust also runs the Great North Trauma and Emergency Centre at the RVI, which serves patients from across the Northern Trauma Network.
Services are delivered through eight clinical boards covering family health, medicine and emergency care, surgery, specialist services, cancer and haematology, cardiothoracic services, perioperative and critical care, and clinical and research services.
Newcastle Hospitals has a strong reputation for research and innovation. Working closely with Newcastle University and other partners, the Trust helps develop and test new treatments, technologies and ways of caring for patients. Its research supports improvements in healthcare both in the region and across the UK.
The Trust is part of the North East National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) HealthTech Research Centre network and works with Diagnostics North East to support the development of new diagnostic tests. Through the North East Innovation Lab, it works with organisations from around the world to assess and validate new diagnostic products before they are introduced into routine patient care.
